Tungsten heavy metal

Tungsten heavy-metal (THM)

The jack of all trades among tungsten alloys. Due to its high variable density, a wide range of properties can be achieved depending on the addition of iron or copper.

Fritz-Weis

Tungsten heavy-metal has a tungsten content between 85 and 98.5% by weight. The remainder either consists of lightly magnetic nickel/iron or nonmagnetic (paramagnetic) nickel/copper. Tungsten heavy-metals are characterized by high densities ranging from 17 to 18.5 g/cm³ and by their high strength and ductility. Compared to chemically pure tungsten, THMs are much more easily machinable. Turning, milling, and drilling operations are performed with carbide tools – thread cutting is also possible. As a result, even complex components can be manufactured to customer drawing.
